HoT Pre-Purchase Update and Clarifications from ArenaNet

Many people were quite upset by the options available for pre-purchasing Heart of Thorns. The past week on various forms of social media, many have criticezed ArenaNet heavily for their wording and prices. Just today, ArenaNet have now made a blog post addressing the community to clarify their business plans and also to offer some extras. Here’s the rundown:

  • If you purchased and registered GW2 before January 23, 2015 and pre-purchase Heart of Thorns, you will get an additional character slot added to your account.
  • If you purchased and registered GW2 between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 you will automatically be refunded what you paid for the core game if you pre-purchase Heart of Thorns by July 31,2015
  • If you purchased and registered GW2 between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 and you no longer wish to play GW2, you can be fully refunded and have your account closed as long as you submit the request by July 31, 2015
  • In the future, the core game and all previous expansions will be bundled in with the sale of new expansions to make it easy for new players to jump in

  1. Well in that case- Pre-Purchase!

Really??? This is what they did????

  3. I wonder if I got this right. I would be eligible for a refund of the core game, because I started in February 2015, but someone who started playing before January 23 only gets an extra character slot? Please tell me I’m reading this incorrectly.

    • That is correct. Depending on how you look at it, it evens out. There were many sales lowering the base game price to $10 USD in the past few months. Character slots cost 800 gems, which is $10 USD to purchase. If you’re an altoholic like me, a character slot is a great addition. For others of course it doesn’t mean as much.

  4. Still not admitting to their own marketing mistakes, but at least it’s something. Should calm things down until the next huge scandal.

  5. Two things.
    1. Still no release date. If they’re taking money, they should give an idea of when you’ll get what you are paying for.

    2. Still no comment on how stupid the term “pre-purchase” is. You’re PURCHASING it. They’re just not giving it to you yet. “Pre-purchase” is before you give them money. 😛
